About the Art

Samudra Manthan

By Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal

Legend has it that the Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (Demons) collaborated in a rare joint endeavor to churn the ocean and reap all the treasures that it held. The churning yielded ‘Amrut’ (nectar of eternal life) but it also yielded the deadliest poison. The Devas kept the Amrut and the only one who could handle the poison was Lord Shiva. This painting by Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal so beautifully weaves the story of Samudra Manthan and all the treasures that were reaped from it.

This particular jacket features ‘Pārijāt’, the divine flowering tree with blossoms that never fade or wilt and ‘Kamadhenu’, the divine cow that grants every wish.
