About the Art
Samudra Manthan

By Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal

Legend has it that the Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (Demons) collaborated in a rare joint endeavor to churn the ocean and reap all the treasures that it held. The churning yielded ‘Amrut’ (nectar of eternal life) but it also yielded the deadliest poison. The Devas kept the Amrut and the only one who could handle the poison was Lord Shiva. He drank the poison and his throat turned blue as a result, earning him the name “Neelkanth”. This painting by Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal so beautifully weaves the story of Samudra Manthan and all the treasures that were reaped from it.

This beautiful jacket features a ‘Navratna Haar’, a traditional necklace that is an ode to the nine celestial gods
