About the Art
Samudra Manthan

By Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal

Legend has it that the Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (Demons) collaborated in a rare joint endeavor to churn the ocean and reap all the treasures that it held. The churning yielded Amrut (Nectar of eternal life) but it also yielded the deadliest poison.

The Devas kept the Amrut as the only one who could handle the poison was Lord Shiva.

He drank the poison turning his throat blue as a result, earning him the name “Neelkanth”. This painting by Dr. Jatinder Singh Bhogal so beautifully weaves the story of Samudra Manthan and all the treasures that we reaped from it.
