Samudra Manthan

Churning of the ocean

Legend has it that the Devas (Gods) and the Asuras (Demons) collaborated in a rare joint endeavor to churn the ocean and reap all the treasures that it held. Jatinder has beautifully brought together all the elements in this painting – mount Mandara the churning rod; Vasuki, the serpent king who abides on Shiva’s neck was the churning rope; Vishnu, in the form of a turtle Kurma supported the mountain on his back and the fourteen ratnas that reaped from the ocean. Seen here are also Varuni, the goddess of wine, ‘Uchhaishravas’ the devine seven-headed horse and the ‘Shankha’ Lord Vishnu’s conch.

Acrylic on canvas.
